There’s been a bit of an outward shock in the world of “Fast”: Longtime director Justin Lin left the franchise just one week to shoot “Fast X,” which is now being billed. It’s Part 1 of the trilogy — and he’s been replaced by franchise fan “The Transporter” director Louis Leterrier, who swoops in to save the world like a family member of Dom driving the muscle car out of the plane

But rest assured, family, in “Fast X,” Corona is cold, boots are shaking. And the armband is still optional. Leterrier works on a script credited by Lin and Dan Mazeau, behind the wheel with the enthusiasm of a child. with a new set of toys Thrilling collisions with cars and characters He clearly has respect for the legends of this franchise. It spawned a story of a drag race and a DVD player robbery. But he did not show Lin’s restraint. Which is pretty funny considering the director’s antics in the series.

If Leterrier is making a “Fast” fanfiction, then Jason Momoa is teasing as Dante Reyes, the franchise’s flashy new villain. Of “Fast 10,” Momoa is linked again in the final episode of Lyn’s “Fast Six,” in which Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) and Dom drag a bank vault full of money. A drug bill owned by Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) leaves a police station in Rio de Janeiro with the usual charger connected to it. Dante is Reyes’ son seeking revenge on Dom’s family for His family was destroyed.

A head injury turns Dante into the Joker, the fucking younger brother he portrayed in Fast 10, strutting around in satin and tights. Giggling like a whip Snailley as he forces Dom to choose his family members. Save and yell “Great!” at a particularly large explosion. At one point he taunted someone who “In Danger” taunts Dom while inadvertently referring to the long history of making action-adventure movies. Why a “fast” franchise if not “Pauline’s Danger” on steroids? If only Buster Keaton could get this.

At least Momoa and Leterrier had fun in “Fast Ten.” The rest of the gang seemed a little lost. Scattered around the world for no reason Diesel seems empty, and at this point, he’s just the vehicle that keeps the franchise moving forward. Staring patiently at his seemingly new family members who appeared out of nowhere, drifting Dodges dutifully.

Leterrier has facilities for car-based action sequences. And the racing scenes have a playful quality as the camera swoops around the windshield and wanders into the windows to link up close-ups of various racers. An early sequence in which Dante sends a giant bomb around Rome was such a ridiculous thing. And of course, Rio’s iconic drag racing scene offers the kind of “Fast and Furious” reggaeton thrills we’re looking for.

But the problem with “Fast X” lies at the more structured story level. It felt like Leatherrier and the writer were digging into loose family ties. and guest stars and putting the characters together to make some nonsense Throw Oscar winners (number: four) in front of the audience to distract them from each other. Weaknesses in the script Brie Larson’s four scenes are essentially meaningless guest appearances. Scott Eastwood appears and then disappears. The character crosses and crosses twice and then crosses again, while long-standing franchise standouts Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Sung Kang are left roaming London for some reason.

Leterrier and Momoa bring energy and excitement to “Fast X,” which drives the engine to deliver the goods fans want, but the confusing story and strange treatment of the characters make it impossible. May leave viewers with more questions than answers. And wondering if the franchise is going through toxic fumes?
